Subconscious Terrain
2022
Subconscious Terrain immerses visitors within a cluster of human-sized Sphagnum moss impressions on ethereal fabric panels suspended from the ceiling. This installation mirrors a community of moss floating in a watery bog. My interest is in how the panels respond to air movement, as visitors navigate between them, to see how this echoes the way a bog breathes in response to changing water levels. I intend these delicate prints to embody the fragility of threatened bog environments, while attempting to elevate the vitality of peatlands as mitigators of floods, drought, global warming and climate change.

Subconscious Terrain
2021
Subconscious Terrain invites visitors into a metaphorical bog of moss images that situates them between a resting ground and a place of unrest. Immersive photo-based installations illuminate Sphagnum moss within physical and imaginative space, intersecting human and non-human ecosystems. This work is a meditation on the life and death of Sphagnum habitats and their capacity for resuscitation and preservation. The delicate prints that inhabit the gallery embody the fragility of threatened bog environments, while attempting to elevate the vitality of peatlands as mitigators of global warming and climate change.
This project was made possible with the generous support of the Manitoba Arts Council.
